Responsible fish policy
We take fish seriously at Fryz. Therefore, we are pleased to summarise some of the points we think about when we sell and source fish for our menu:
- Our Cod and Haddock is always wild caught frozen at sea fillets from the carefully managed North Atlantic and Barents Sea;
- Our Cod and Haddock does NOT come from the North Sea nor anywhere “managed” by the EU Common Fisheries Policy;
- In particular, the unpopular discard policy highlighted in, e.g., Hugh's Fish Fight, although noble is not directly relevant to our fish because Norway introduced a ban on discard in 1987. Indeed, the success of the Norwegian fisheries is attributed to the establishment of a program of temporary closures of fishing grounds;
- We are currently using fish from the following boats:
- Frozen at sea fillets are filleted and frozen within six hours of being caught so is actually ‘Fresher’ than variable ‘Fresh’ wet fish;
-
We sell fish with with Skin on because:
- we feel it provides a superior quality product;
- the fish can be readily identified.
- In April 2010, Norwegian cod and haddock fisheries were certified as sustainable under the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) environmental standard for sustainable and well managed fisheries;
- We offer a variety of seafish via our Fish Menu;
- We have self-imposed sustainability targets;
- We do not sell fish species whose IUCN Red List status is less than Vulnerable. Current IUCN Red List status for the species we sell:
- Cod (Gadus morhua): vulnerable;
- Haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus): vulnerable;
- Plaice (Pleuronectes platessa): least concern;
- Rock (Squalus acanthias): vulnerable;
- Scampi (Nephrops norvegicus): least concern.
-
We stopped selling Skate (Dipturus batis) in June 2008 when we became fully enlightened to it's IUCN Red List status: critically endangered:
- We have Seafish Responsible Sourcing Guides on hand at the shop for interested customers to browse. These guides are designed to provide fish and seafood buyers with objective information on stock status.
