Fryz waste oil makes Bio-Fuel

We have teamed up with Agri Energy. Agri Energy are leading the way in turning waste cooking oil into green bio-diesel and bio-fuel for renewable energy production.

Agri Energy now collect all Fryz waste Palm Oil for this purpose, thus further reducing Fryz' Carbon Footprint.

Fish & Chip Shop of the Year Competition 2008

Voting has begun in the annual Seafish Fish & Chip Shop of the Year Competition. The competition, now in its 21st year, recognises and awards the UK's best fish & chip shops.

Fryz is entering the competition for the third time. The initial stage of the competition involves Fryz customers filling in voting forms. If you would like to nominate Fryz in the competition then please ask for a voting form over the counter. Voting begins on 26th July and closes on the 16th August.

Fryz Fish Menu

Ever wondered what the difference is between Cod and Haddock? Or wondered what Rock is? We have produced a Fish Menu to inform our customers what each of the fish we sell tastes like. We hope that the menu will not only serve to be informative but also encourage adventurousness when buying fish at Fryz.

No skating

At Fryz, we have taken the decision to remove Skate from the menu. We have taken this decision after becoming fully enlightened to the conservation status of the Common Skate (Dipturus batis), which is the species we have been selling.

Dipturus batis was uplisted from ‘Endangered’ to ‘Critically Endangered’ globally on the 2006 IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. The Red List is widely considered to be the most authoritative with respect to classification of species at risk of extinction.

At Fryz, we believe that to support sustainable fishing it is necessary to offer a good selection of fish. Now, of the other fish we currently offer (Cod, Haddock, Plaice and Rock), although vulnerable, the situation differs because their status would only be uplisted to ‘Endangered’ or worse if the circumstances threatening their survival and reproduction are mismanaged. The situation for Dipturis batis appears to be much more immediately perilous.

The move is aimed at encouraging consumption of less vulnerable fish and we apologise for any inconvenience this decision may cause.

Recycling trade waste

Fryz are proud to announce that we now recycle over 50% of our trade waste using Peterborough City Council's Trade Recycling Scheme.

This is the first step in a concerted effort to minimise Fryz' Carbon Footprint.

Historically, fish and potatoes were cheap. Therefore, Fish & Chips could be prepared and sold cheaply. Due to the longevity of Fish & Chips – our only takeaway food for decades – we all have childhood memories of it being a low priced meal. However, we also used to pay 1/9d for a seat in the cinema (try offering that, scaled by inflation, at the Odeon today!). The Fish & Chip trade must shake the perception of being "cheap and cheerful".

Over the past few months we have experienced rises in cost prices for the majority of our basic products. The fish has increased slightly but we have seen increases in the price of palm oil (partly due to increased demand from the biofuel market), batter (due to both poor weather and transport costs), packaging prices (due to transport costs), and wage costs (due to increases in the minimum wage and new holiday legislation). This has meant an increase in costs for all the processes – from raw material to finished product. We also endeavour to keep the cod we use sustainable and of the highest quality.

No other takeaway food is – when properly prepared – healthy, freshly cooked, made from fresh ingredients, nutritionally balanced and contains less than 7% fat (if served with a portion of peas).

We at Fryz we strive to offer the best value possible, especially when compared to other takeaway foods. However, rising costs due to the current economic climate and other factors outside of our control has meant rising cost to the customer. To survive, we must charge the proper price for our products.

National Chip Week 2008

Treasure the moment with chips at Fryz this National Chip Week 11th–17th February 2008. The event, organised by the British Potato Council, celebrates chips as one of our national treasures. During the week pop into Fryz for a portion of tasty chips and the chance to win some great prizes.

Fryz will be encouraging everyone to treasure the moment with chips. We will be decorating the shop to join in the National Chip Week celebrations. You will also be able to scratch and win some great prizes, including romantic weekends away.

For the first time, National Chip Week will include the "National Golden Chip Award" to find the best chips in Britain. Voting is by way of completing a nomination form by visiting www.lovechips.co.uk. Voting closes on 17th February 2008.

Townhead Café

Fryz would like to congratulate Gordon and Sandra Hillan and all the team at 'The Townhead Café' in the Scottish Borders town of Biggar who were crowned 'Fish & Chip Shop of the Year' today.

Gordon and his wife Sandra won the judges over by embracing the issue of sustainable sourcing, prominently displaying the source of the seafood they serve throughout the shop.

'Andy’s Fish Bar' in Swadlincote, Derbyshire came second in the competition with 'Seniors' in Thornton Cleveleys following closely in third place.

Fryz will be sampling fish & chips at the The Townhead Café on a visit to Scotland in February.

Caz and Rob’s daughter Alexa Rose was born on 29th December weighing 7lb 10oz.

Well done to Pat for guessing the closest weight — there are some Fryz vouchers on their way to you. The ‘guess the weight’ competition raised £67.84 for Children in Need. Thank you to everyone who took part.

Guess the weight
