Seafish set up the Fish Friers Quality Award scheme in 1996 as a way of raising standard within the fish & chip trade and enhancing the profile of the industry. The recent innovation in the scheme is that shops are now ranked with stars. Five stars is highest accolade obtainable and we are honoured to have received the top rank.

The scheme is also a way of rewarding and promoting shops that provide a good quality product and high standards of hygiene, as well as friers who show a high level of competence.

To qualify, each shop has to go through a thorough gruelling inspection by a Seafish Approved Inspector who assesses the shop’s image, design and condition, staff training, equipment, frying and sales skills, and most importantly, the quality of the cooked product.

Fryz is proud to be the only fish & chip shop in Peterborough to currently hold the Seafish Fish Friers Quality Award.

Seafish Quality and Trade Executive Jim Hyam said: “Displaying the Seafish Friers Quality Award shows customers that the shop is one of the best frying businesses in the country and not only that, our research proves that by giving quality, businesses can guarantee that customers will keep on coming back.”

Each Seafish Quality Award lasts for one year and retention is dependent on standard being maintained as validated by a Seafish appointed assessor.

In April 2007 the Food Team at Peterborough City Council introduced a "Scores on the Doors" scheme, which allows members of the public to see the results of the last food hygiene inspection in the form of a star rating. Currently, under the Freedom of Information Act, residents have the right to request information on inspections of all food premises. The "Scores on the Doors" scheme allows people to see the information they are legally entitled to receive but in a manner which is easy to understand.

The main aim of the scheme is to raise the standards of food safety for consumers. The scheme gives the public the opportunity to make informed choices about where they choose to eat or buy food based on food safety.

The outcome of the thorough inspection was that Fryz achieved the highest possible score of 5 stars.

The RNMDSF is a charity who support the families, widows and children, of the fishermen who are lost and injured at sea. The real cost of fishing is their lives.

To claim, just cut out the voucher in the paper and present it at your chosen fish and chip restaurant to claim your two-for-one fish & chips. At Fryz, vouchers can be used at any time until 30th April 2009.

Anstruther Fish Bar were crowned as champions after a rigorous judging process which included a customer vote, taste tests, two intense rounds of shop inspections and a presentation to a panel of industry experts.

Colmans of South Shields was named the second best shop in the country with North West regional winners, Thornton Fisheries, coming in third place.

The Fryz team enjoyed a lovely Christmas staff meal at Imperial Bento, Peterborough.

We also held a 'guess the Pudsey' raffle to win £20 of Fryz vouchers – congratulations to Tracey who won the vouchers. The total money raised for Children in Need was £94.

The theme for this year's Seafood Week is '2 a week'. Seafish, who organise the event, will be encouraging people to act on the Food Standards Agency’s recommendation to eat two portions of seafood a week during this years’ two week long celebration.

We are naturally very disappointed to have exited the competition at the earliest opportunity. Furthermore, this is a particularly bitter pill because by direct comparison with last years nomination forms we had improved on our results by a significant amount - once again our customers believe we have improved!

Only the top 120 customer nomination forms are counted and each form is worth 100 points, giving a possible maximum score of 12,000. Here is how Fryz has fared in the past three competitions:

• 2008: 11 points dropped; 1st round exit;
• 2007: 168 points dropped; 1st round exit;
• 2006: 351 points dropped; 2nd round exit;

Frustratingly, despite incredible customer nomination scores, Fryz have failed to make any significant progress in the competition.

We will try again next year! However, we have been cheered up by kind words of encouragement from former national competition winner Mark Petrou of Petrou Brothers fame:

"I am still of the opinion that you are one of the very best operators I have seen in all my travels to different shops. You guys deserve a break. Your shop and your whole ethic to the job makes you perfect ambassadors for the trade."

The Petrou Brothers have reached the 2nd round and Fryz would like to wish them the very best of luck in this years competition.

Agri Energy now collect all Fryz waste Palm Oil for this purpose, thus further reducing Fryz' Carbon Footprint.
